Sponsors' Event at Red Baron's -
October 12, 2004

A gala reception, featuring elegant food, piano music and the sounds of Courtenay Collins, was hosted at Red Baron’s Antiques by owner Bob Brown to honor sponsors already on board with the Town Turtles project and to encourage others to participate. At the reception, Bob Brown presented the Sandy Springs Society with five hundred eight-inch tall baby turtles, specially made for the event. Twenty turtles were given to each school in Sandy Springs for their own use, and the remaining turtles are available for sale to local businesses and citizens.

Naked Turtle Party -
November 14, 2004

A cocktail reception, sponsored by the Sandy Springs Society and Wholefoods, was held at the Abernathy Arts Center to formally introduce “Sandy”, the fifty-six inch Town Turtle, to polite society. The likeness for the fiberglass mold for the whimsical turtle sculpture was drawn by internationally syndicated cartoonist Jack Elrod. Sandy stood before a packed house at this event in his unpainted state, wearing nothing but a fig leaf, to greet the dedicated citizens and artists of Sandy Springs who had joined forces to make the Town Turtles project a success.

Turtle Trot Parade -
Saturday Apr 16, 2005

Thousands of spectators lined the streets of Sandy Springs to welcome the arrival of the uniquely painted Town Turtles as they trotted into the hearts of its citizens. Grand marshal Jack Elrod, who created Sandy, led the parade. The Town Turtles were joined by local dignitaries, and the event featured vintage vehicles, canine entertainers, balloons, turtle tracks ice cream, grilled hot dogs courtesy of Kroger, and miniature chocolate turtles, hand made by Schakolad especially for the Town Turtles event. The Turtle Trot parade was the first time all seventy-five of the painted turtles were gathered together in a “bale”, a grouping of turtles.
